The Thirteenth Columbus “Souper Bowl” Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, February 2 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p. m. at Congregation Beth Tikvah, 6121 Olentangy River Road in Worthington.
Proceeds from the Souper Bowl—organized by the Brotherhood of Congregation Beth Tikvah—will provide scholarships for local children to attend Jewish summer camps. “Children who attend Jewish summer camps,” observed event organizer Jeff Wasserstrom, “develop a deeper and longer-lasting connection with their Jewish heritage. That is why the Brotherhood has worked on this program for the past thirteen years.”
“In addition to soup, the Brotherhood also provides other food items and dessert,” noted Steve Dritz, Beth Tikvah Brotherhood President, “The price of admission essentially gets you an entire dinner for you and your family.”
Purchase of a $10 ticket ($5 for children) entitles the holder to sample the soup, and to vote for a favorite. Folks attending are also encouraged bring cans of soup that will be donated to Holy Family Soup Kitchen, a food pantry operated by the Catholic Church. Children under 5 years are free.
The night will also include a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction with many great prizes, entertainment by Matt Ryan Mobile DJ Entertainment, and a photo booth by Photos That Flash.
“The photo booth and DJ make the evening quite a family-friendly,” observed Wasserstrom, “Kids are dancing and families line-up for photos. It’s just such a fun and affordable event for the community to join together and support one another by helping send kids to Jewish summer camp. “
“People of all ages came from all around Columbus for the good soup, a good time, and a good cause,” said event coordinator Jeff Wasserstrom.
Professional entrants in Souper Bowl 13 include: Katzinger’s Delicatessen, Catering by Scott, Simply Special Catering, Cameron’s American Bistro, Fork in the Road Caterer, Flavor 91 Bistro, Harvey & Ed’s, Zoup – Dublin, NAPA Kitchen & Bar, and Two Ladles. Amateur entrants include: Mike Fliegel, Joe Levinson, Mike Siegal, Matt Belasco, and BethTy, the youth group at Congregation Beth Tikvah.
This year, non-chicken soups will be offered such as vegetarian and vegan. “It’s great to get in from the wintry-cold,” observed Dritz, “and enjoy some hot soup—while helping a charitable cause.”
This event is made possible due to the generous support of sponsors: Matt Ryan Mobile DJ Entertainment, Mill Run Vision Center, Dairy Queen, Photos that Flash, Wasserstrom Restaurant Supply, Brady Ware & Company, The Mascot Organization, Harvey & Ed’s, and Nothing Bundt Cakes
Souper Bowl 13 will also include other food, fun, and a chance to win gift cards and special offers from: China Dynasty, Northstar Cafe, Figlio, Refectory, Z Cucina, Dempsey’s Food & Spirits, City BBQ, Rooster’s, Coopers Hawk, Fado Pub & Kitchen, Jason’s Deli, Dewey’s Pizza, Panera, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Sam’s Club, Nationwide Hotel & Conference Center, Golf Club of Dublin, Mathnasium, and many more.
“People feel good helping the food pantry and the children who want to attend summer camp.” Wasserstrom noted, “But most of all, they have such a good time that they look forward to coming back each year.”
